How SCC admissions works
The admissions process at SCC is designed to help prospective students understand what each program asks of them academically, clinically, and on a schedule. We enroll students into our practical nursing, basic nursing assistant, medical assistant, medical administrative assistant, and phlebotomy technician programs throughout the year.
Four steps to enroll
- Request information so an admissions representative can reach out and answer your questions.
- Meet with admissions in person or by phone to review program requirements and start dates.
- Complete the application and submit required documentation (ID, high school diploma or GED, any program-specific health and background items).
- Confirm eligibility and finalize your enrollment paperwork ahead of your cohort start.
General requirements (all programs)
- At least 17 years old at the time of enrollment
- Government-issued photo ID
- High school diploma or GED certificate
- Admissions interview with an SCC representative
Program-specific requirements
Practical Nursing
Requires a criminal background check and current health documentation including tuberculosis testing and hepatitis B vaccination. Clinical placements depend on completing these in advance.
Basic Nursing Assistant
Five-week training program with bedside-care clinicals. Requires basic health documentation and a background check before clinical rotation.
Medical Assistant
Hybrid program (in-person labs + online didactics). Externship placement requires up-to-date immunizations and a background check.
Medical Administrative Assistant
100% online, asynchronous program. Requires reliable internet access and a personal computer; no clinical placement, so no immunization paperwork.
Phlebotomy Technician
Hands-on training in clinical and laboratory settings. Requires immunization records and a background check ahead of the externship phase.
Health Information Management
100% online certificate program. Requires reliable internet access and a personal computer that meets SCC’s recommended computer specifications. No clinical placement is required.

Is State Career College accredited?
Yes. State Career College is institutionally accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) and approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE), Division of Private Business and Vocational Schools. Accreditation can be verified through abhes.org and ibhe.org.
How much does it cost to attend, and is financial aid available?
Total program costs range from about $1,800 (CNA) to $27,397 (Practical Nursing). SCC accepts FAFSA (federal school code 041896), employer tuition reimbursement, payment plans, and scholarships. Use the net price calculator for a personalized estimate.
What are the laptop or home computer tech requirements for my training program?
Students provide their own laptop or home computer and need daily access to it, plus reliable high-speed internet and an active email account. Recommended minimums: Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11, or one of the three latest macOS versions; a 4th generation Intel Core i3/i5/i7 or newer (or AMD equivalent), or an Apple computer from 2013 or newer; 4 GB of RAM; and a screen resolution of at least 1024×768. All SCC programs use the Canvas learning management system (LMS). Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, Basic Nursing Assistant, Health Information Management, and Medical Administrative Assistant also use Elsevier, which requires a Windows or Mac computer — a Chromebook, tablet, or phone is not enough.
