Computer Requirements

Students provide their own computer for online coursework. Use these recommended specifications when choosing a laptop or home computer for your SCC program.

Before you start

  • Daily access to a computer that meets the specifications below
  • Reliable high-speed internet access and an active email account
  • Sign a Distance Education Agreement confirming you have the required hardware and software
  • Demonstrate basic technological proficiency and readiness
  • SCC provides login credentials for all learning platforms before your start date

Students using Elsevier products

Students using Elsevier products must have daily access to a computer meeting the following specifications:

Operating system

  • Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11
  • macOS — the three latest versions: 13 Ventura, 14 Sonoma, or 15 Sequoia

Hardware

  • 4th generation (4000 series) Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 or newer, or AMD equivalent (Apple computers from 2013 or newer)
  • 4 GB of memory (RAM)
  • Intel HD Graphics 3000 or better
  • Minimum supported screen resolution: 1024×768
  • An active email account

Hardware acceleration is required to render graphics, so virtualization software (such as VMware or Parallels) is not supported for the Digital Clinical Experience.

Not supported on the Shadow Health platform

  • iOS devices (iPhone and iPad)
  • Android devices (phones and tablets)
  • Chromebooks
  • Linux/GNU-based operating systems

Students using UWorld products

Students using UWorld products must have daily access to a computer meeting the following specifications:

Windows

  • Microsoft Windows 7 or higher (excluding Windows RT) with administrator privileges and English as the input and display language
  • Pentium IV 1.5 GHz processor or faster
  • 4 GB of RAM or more
  • Stable, high-speed internet connection
  • Edge or Chrome v116+, or Firefox (latest or ESR 115+), with JavaScript and cookies enabled
  • Minimum screen resolution: 1280×800

Apple Mac

  • macOS 12.7.x or higher (13.x, 14.x, 15.x, 26.x) with administrator privileges and English as the input and display language
  • 1.5 GHz processor or faster
  • 4 GB of RAM or more
  • Stable, high-speed internet connection
  • Safari v17+, Firefox (latest or ESR 115+), Edge v116+, or Chrome v116+, with JavaScript and cookies enabled
  • Minimum screen resolution: 1280×800
  • Apple QuickTime 7.0 or higher

iPhone and iPad

  • iOS 14.0 or higher
  • At least 20 MB of free storage for the app
  • Stable internet connection (Wi-Fi recommended)
  • Photos access turned on for the app (Settings → Privacy → Photos)
  • App Store account to download the free app

Mobile access to question banks is an additional feature, not a replacement for computer access.

Android phones and tablets

  • Android 9.0 or higher
  • At least 5 MB of free storage for the app
  • Stable internet connection (Wi-Fi recommended)
  • Google Play account to download the free app

Chromebook

  • Chrome OS v90.0 or higher
  • 1.5 GHz processor or faster
  • 8 GB of RAM or more
  • Stable, high-speed internet connection
  • Latest version of Google Chrome with JavaScript and cookies enabled
  • Minimum screen resolution: 1366×768

Good to know

  • These are minimum requirements. Personal security software, firewalls, proxy servers, VPNs, and cookie or cache management tools may affect how learning platforms perform.
  • Unsupported browsers, virtualization software, and other operating systems (such as Unix or Linux) are not supported by these platforms.
